Oil ChangeAs a car owner, you know the importance of keeping your car functioning smoothly.  Routine maintenance, repairs when needed, and paying attention to how well your car is functioning are all important parts of keeping things smooth.  One of the most common tasks that needs to be completed routinely is that of an oil change.  So, the question is, “How often do I need to have an oil change done on my car?”  The answer to that question varies depending on who you talk to, how much you use your car, and whether your car is losing oil through a leak or burning.

Do You Really Need an Oil Change? How to Figure It Out

In general, it is recommended that you have an oil change performed every 3,000-10,000 miles or every 6 months.  However, if you notice that your car is burning oil or that it is losing oil through a leak, you may need an oil change sooner.  In the case that you are losing oil, you also probably need to get your car checked to see if you can get the issue fixed.  If you commute far distances on a daily basis, you will probably need to get your oil changed more often than every 6 months.  However, if you drive only occasionally, your car will probably not need an oil change until long after the 6 months are up.  If you are driving a brand new car with very little use, it may not need an oil change until 7,500 miles. Some telltale signs that you need an oil change include:

  • Oil that is darker in color
  • Your check engine light keeps coming on
  • Strange noises coming from the engine, such as a rattling when your car is idling

As you can tell, there are many different factors to consider when deciding whether it is time for an oil change.  If you are wondering whether your car is due, contact us at Kevin’s Car Repair.   We have the expertise that allows us to help you keep your car running smoothly.
